Tag questions

In Vietnamese, không is also used to form tag questions, in parallel with neutral yes-no questions. Tag questions are short questions added to the end of a statement, often used for confirmation or to seek agreement. In English, tag questions are often formed with “right?” or “OK?”.

Structure

Add a word like đúng, phải or được plus không to the end of the statement.

Examples

  • Hôm nay trời có mưa, đúng không?Today it is going to rain, right?
  • Anh thích ăn kem, phải không?You like to eat ice cream, right?
  • Chúng ta sẽ về sớm, được không?We’ll leave early, OK?

Answering tag questions is similar to answering biased yes-no questions.
