Expressing “also” with “cũng”

In Vietnamese, cũng is used to express “too” or “also”.

Cũng with verbs

To express “also”, place cũng before the verb.

Structure

cũng + verb / verb phrase

Examples

  • Tôi cũng thích đọc sách.I also like to read books.
  • Động vật cũng cần uống nước.Animals also need to drink water.
  • Tôi cũng không hiểu anh ấy nói gì.I also don’t understand what he says.
  • Ngày mai trời cũng mưa.It also rains tomorrow.
  • Anh cũng biết chuyện đó à?You also know that, don’t you?

Cũng with adjectives

The structure with adjectives is the same as with verbs.

Structure

cũng + adj.

Examples

  • Tôi cũng đói.I’m also hungry.
  • Anh ta cũng không cao lắm.He’s also not very tall.
  • Thời tiết ở đó cũng rất đẹp.The climate there is also very nice.

Expressing “me too” with cũng

You can’t just say tôi cũng all by itself to express “me too”. That is not a complete sentence because leaving cũng there with nothing after it makes the sentence “hang”.

The correct way to phrase it is tôi cũng vậy, which literally means “I’m like that (way) too”.

Structure

Another word that can be used instead of vậy is thế. They mean the same thing.

  • Tôi cũng. ❌
  • Tôi cũng vậy. ✔
  • Tôi cũng thế. ✔Me too.

This structure also works with other subjects, not just tôi.

Examples

  • A:Tôi thích đọc sách.I like to read books.
  • B:Tôi cũng vậy.Me too.
