Expressing “but” with “nhưng”

In Vietnamese, we use nhưng to express “but”.

Structure

Place nhưng before the opposite of the previous statement.

statement + nhưng + opposite

Alternatively, we can use nhưng mà. It’s basically the same thing but feels more like spoken Vietnamese than written.

statement + nhưng mà + opposite

Examples

• Nó thông minh nhưng lười.
  He’s smart but lazy.
