Expressing “to call” with “gọi”

In Vietnamese, we use gọi to express “to call”. It may seem simple, but there are some noteworthy points about its usage.

Basic usage

Structure

Place gọi before the object of a sentence to express “to call”.

gọi + obj.

Examples

  • Anh vừa gọi tôi à?You just called me, right?
  • Gọi nó dậy đi.Wake him up. (lit. Call him awake.)
  • Tôi đã gọi xe cứu thương.I called an ambulance.

With a name/role/title

Structure

Add plus a name/role/title after the object to express “to call [something] name/role/title”

gọi + obj. + + name/role/title

Examples

  • Người ta gọi đây là một phép màu.They call it a miracle.
  • Chúng tôi gọi anh ta là Hải “Chuột”.We call him Hải “the Rat”.

Middle voice usage

In addition to “to call”, gọi can also express “to be called” while grammatically in the active voice, similar to “to sell” in “the book sells well”, or the middle voice.

Structure

Add (“to be”) after gọi to express “to be called”.

gọi là + obj.

Examples

  • Anh trai của cha gọi là bác.Father’s brothers are called uncles.
  • Tại sao gọi là chuột (máy tính)?Why is it called a (computer) mouse?
  • Không tồn tại cái gọi là “giải pháp hoàn hảo”.The so-called “perfect solution” doesn’t exist.
  • Đây gọi là “một mũi tên trúng hai đích”.This is called “killing two birds with one stone”.
