Expressing “to need” with “cần”

In Vietnamese, we use cần to express “to need”.

Place cần before a noun or a verb to express “to need”.

Examples

• Anh cần ăn nhiều hơn.
  You need to eat more.

Pairing with “to have to”

We can pair cần with phải (“to have to”), another modal verb. It’s stronger than cần but weaker than phải, something in-between.

• Chúng ta cần phải học tập chăm chỉ.
  We need to study hard.
