In Vietnamese, we use tên to talk about names.
Basic structure
Structure
Place tên plus a name after the subject of a sentence to express “[subject]’s name is [name]”.
Subj. + tên + name
Alternatively, we can add là (“to be”) right after tên without affecting the meaning.
Subj. + tên + là + name
The [name] can be a full name or just a given name.
Examples
- Tôi tên Minh.My name is Minh.
- Anh ấy tên là Nguyễn Thanh Tùng.His name is Nguyễn Thanh Tùng.
- Anh tên là gì?What is your name?
Non-human names
For non-human names, we can bring in có (“to have”).
Structure
Add có right before tên.
Subj. + có + tên (+ là) + name
Examples
- Bức tranh này có tên là “Tiếng Thét”.The name of this painting is “The Scream”.
