In Vietnamese, we use thứ to form ordinal numbers, similar to “-th” in English. While English needs four different suffixes for the same purpose: “-st”, “-nd”, “-rd”, and “-th”, Vietnamese only needs one.
Structure
Place thứ before a number to turn it into an ordinal number. There are two exceptions: “first” and “fourth”.

It’s not always the same as in English. In some cases, Vietnamese uses cardinal numbers despite English using ordinals.

Side note: the word for “floor” is tầng in the Northern dialect and lầu in the Southern dialect. The Northern dialect works like American English: “first floor” (street level) is tầng một, “second floor” is tầng hai, and so on. In contrast, the Southern dialect works like British English: “ground floor” (street level) is lầu trệt, “first floor” is lầu một, and so on.

In some cases, it’s mixed between the two. For example, it’s ordinal for “April”:

Two words for “first”
Apart from thứ nhất, another word that can express “first” is đầu tiên. There is a (rather big) difference between the two: conceptually, đầu tiên refers to time while thứ nhất refers to space. Because of this, they are sometimes interchangeable, but not always.
For example, người đầu tiên and người thứ nhất both mean “first person”, but the former implies “the first person to do something” while the latter implies “the first person in a list”. Of course, in many cases, the distinction between them is blurred.
In general, đầu tiên is used much more frequently than thứ nhất, but there are cases where the latter must be used:

Historical events and periods, despite related to time, also use thứ nhất:

When time is involved, đầu tiên is generally the preferred option.

The shortened version of đầu tiên is đầu. Its usage, however, is quite restricted; it can only go with certain words, usually monosyllabic:

Two words for “second”
Most of the time, we use (thứ) hai for “second”, but, in some cases, (thứ) nhì is the only suitable option.
